OVERVIEW OF HISTORY, PHILOSOPHY, AND CONCEPTS

What is Choi Kwang-Do?

Choi Kwang-Do (The Art of Grand Master Kwang Choi) is a self defence system and WELLNESS Art, it is a dynamic, innovative approach to martial arts training Founded by Grandmaster Kwang Jo Choi, 9th Degree Black Belt, Choi Kwang-Do is the culmination of Grandmaster Choi’s more than 60 years of training and teaching the martial arts and has resulted in the development of a fully systemised martial art system designed for todays modern society.

Choi Kwang-Do is based on traditional martial arts philosophy that emphasises the ideal of personal and social development being paramount, rather than sports competition. Choi Kwang-Do classes provide a safe and non-competitive environment for students that helps them to grow not only physically, but mentally as well. The development of good manners, courtesy, self-discipline, self-confidence, and good social adjustment can be considered primary objectives of this art, along with the development of practical self-defence skills.

The techniques and concepts of this art can be considered very non-traditional. Principles of modern science, derived from psychology, kinesiology, and biomechanics, form the basis for Choi Kwang-Do. Conventional martial arts methodology is more often based on mysticism, impractical techniques, or sports competition. Choi Kwang-Do is not designed nor optimized for competition. Instead Choi Kwang-Do is designed to develop all round conditioning and ongoing athletic improvement in muscle conditioning, flexibility, cardiovascular health, joint and bone health. The purpose of the Choi Kwang Do Contests is to provide a vehicle to motivate and educate our members to learn how to raise these health benefits gained in the practice of Choi Kwang Do to even higher levels, all while teaching a martial art that can  be a devastatingly effective self-defence system that can be used in real street situations.
Choi Kwang-Do has been designed to enhance the student’s overall health, fitness, and well being rather than cause the injuries and damage that many competitive sporting activities do.

Finally, Choi Kwang-Do is a dynamic art that continually evolves. As new information on health, fitness, and improved training methods are discovered and developed, it may be formally integrated into the Choi Kwang-Do training system. As students in Choi Kwang-Do, it is welcoming to know that you are not training in a system that is static or based on outdated training methods.

“QUOTE”

“Suffice to say that the rest of the martial arts world waits with baited breath to see just what else they plagiarize in order to maintain their second choice status to that of Choi Kwang-Do”. Mr Paul Clifton Editor of COMBAT, TRADITIONAL KARATE & TAE KWON DO & KOREAN MARTIAL ARTS

I have had the pleasure to meet Mr Paul Clifton, Editor of COMBAT, TRADITIONAL KARATE, and TAE KWON DO & KOREAN MARTIAL ARTS a couple of times.  Here is what he had to say when speaking at the CKD International 10th Anniversary March 1st 1997.             ...I almost fell over !   - Master Bruce Cairney…….

what he had to say……

“As the editor of 3 world leading martial arts magazines, I can assure you there is very little that can be classed as new in the world of martial arts.
I must admit that I too was very sceptical about some of the statements being brandished about, such as ;

“It has given me a new vigour for life” and
“since taking up the study of Choi Kwang -Do I can face any obstacle in life”

My scepticism was quashed, however, when I finally had the pleasure of meeting and interviewing the man behind this revolutionary martial art; Grandmaster Kwang Jo Choi.
This man has helped many thousands of people to achieve their personal goals and overcome great personal problems.  But more importantly he has brought back essential and traditional values such as manners, respect, dignity, courtesy, self belief and pride.
All the qualities that have slipped through the net of time but are (by design) crucial to the study of Choi Kwang-Do.

I am very honoured to be invited here today to celebrate the work of this incredible human being.

You would be forgiven for thinking that all he has achieved would be enough for the lifetime work of a man, but you would be wrong.

I know that as time progresses so will Choi Kwang-Do, and I also know that there are many unique and exciting developments in progress of which I cannot speak of at this time.   Suffice to say that the rest of the martial arts world waits with baited breath to see just what else they plagiarize in order to maintain their second choice status to that of Choi Kwang-Do.  I can assure you that with my vast experience in the martial arts world, No other martial art is working as hard to improve and advance as Choi Kwang-Do.
Please be upstanding and join me in saluting the man that has made millions of dreams true and who continues to push back the boundaries of martial excellence !
Grandmaster Kwang Jo Choi and all Choi Kwang-Do practitioners

PIL SUNG
-Thank you – .”
